Girls Wrestling Triumphs With Five Medalists At Wright City Tournament

The girls’ wrestling team kicked off their season with a bang at the Wright City Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 18. This resilient group of nine wrestlers consisted of three who were the champions of their class and two who finished in 3rd place.

Head coach Brad Landwehr expressed immense pride in how his team performed on Saturday. “I think the strength that stood out the most was [the] confidence that we brought. We have a group that has been together for a while now,” he explained. “There’s a ‘we’ve been here before’ feeling to them and success is now their expectations for themselves. That confidence is contagious for our freshmen and you could see that as well.”

Senior Jade Studdard clinched 1st place for the second year at Wright City and in the 140-pound class. She went undefeated in four rounds and contributed 17.5 team points. Studdard dominated her opponents and even secured a 17-point tech fall win in the 3rd round.

Junior Dorie Richardson also made 1st place and dominated the 145 weight class. She swiftly pinned her first opponent in 19 seconds and persevered through a tough 4:52 fight in round 2 before winning by decision.

In her debut wrestling tournament, freshman Mariah Denney impressively secured 1st place in the 120 class. Accumulating 18 points for Sullivan, she had a four-round winning streak with a quick 1:45 pin down in her final match.

Junior Karen Dietzler finished 3rd in the 115 class, contributing 15 points through 5 challenging fights. Despite setbacks in rounds 2 and 4, Dietzler rebounded and emerged victorious in a 3:49 match to finish in the top 3.

Junior Sadie Altimus clinched 3rd place in the 155 weight class and earned 15 points. Overcoming a 1st round loss, she swiftly defeated her next two opponents in about a minute each and battled through a 4:45 match in the 4th round before securing victory in 1:23 against her final opponent.
