Girls Wrestling Makes History At Districts Tourney
Girls' wrestling clinched 2nd place out of 27 teams at the Class 1 District 1 Tournament hosted at Union High School from Feb. 9–10. A week after securing their first tournament title in program history, the girls achieved their highest place in districts with 153 points.
Head coach Brad Landwehr explained that to motivate his girls to achieve these milestones; he said, “We really focus on the team aspect of the sport. When they understand that we are trying to accomplish big things as a team and their teammates are counting on them to give everything they have, it brings out the best in them.”
Mariah Denney (120) and Abigail Erfurth (235) emerged as the district champions of their weight classes.
Sullivan’s other five state qualifiers were Jade Studdard (135), Dorie Richardson (140) and Maria Schatzl (155), who clinched 2nd; Chloe Carson (190), who ranked 3rd; and Ruby Daily (170), who landed 4th.
Karen Dietzler’s (110) placement was unknown.
Sullivan’s girls and boys state qualifiers will compete at the University of Missouri in Columbia from Feb. 21–22.
St. Clair won the district championship with 163 points, followed by Sullivan (153), Owensville (134), DeSoto (124), Ste. Genevieve (106.5), Festus/Potosi (99), Central Park Hills (90), Pacific (61) and Herculaneum (54) round out the top 10.
