Girls Wrestling Clinches 2nd Place At Lady Dragon Classic
Girls wrestling secured 2nd place with 149 points in DeSoto at the 4th Annual Lady Dragon Wrestling Classic on Friday, Jan. 26. Sullivan boasted four champions and seven medalists.
Marshfield clinched 1st with 200 points, DeSoto claimed 3rd, Central (Park Hills) took 4th, Ft. Zumwalt East finished 5th, Festus ranked 6th, Potosi got 7th, Pacific secured 8th, Hillsboro landed 9th and North County rounded out the top 10. There were 18 teams in total.
With districts just a week away on Feb. 9–10, Sullivan head coach Brad Landwehr tells his girls to “keep the axe sharp at this point in the season.” He said, “We have a few small adjustments to make, but overall, we are just going to continue to push the girls, as we have all day to stay focused.”
Mariah Denney (24-4) took 1st place in the 120 class and scored 30 points for her team. She pinned Abigail Killian (Hillsboro) in 3:36, Alise Yn (Parkway Central) in 1:35, Emma Taylor (DeSoto) in 0:52 and Alyxandrea Keifert (Marshfield) in 3:49.
Jade Studdard (26-2) secured 1st place in the 135 class with 30 points. She took down Carly Saunders (Potosi) at 0:25, Paytan Rulo (DeSoto) at 1:53, Lily Ahlvin (Notre Dame-Cape Girardeau) at 4:45 and Trinity Butler (Festus) at 5:11.
Dorie Richardson (27-2) clinched 1st in the 140 class and collected 24 points. She quickly wrapped up Jayden Pendleton (North County) in 1:50, won a 5-3 overtime victory over Dani Gullet (Festus) and pinned Eddyson Reeves (Herculaneum) in 4:40.
Abigail Erfurth (14-3) finished 1st in the 235 class and scored 20 points. She won both of her matches, locking up LaRae Hampton (Ft. Zumwalt East) at 3:50 and Ella Mitchem (Central (Park Hills)) at 2:20.
