Girls Basketball Lands Fourth At De Soto Tourney
Last week, the Lady Eagles (1-3) battled Dragons and Tigers at a De Soto tournament.
Sullivan tipped off the Fountain City Classic on a high note, slaying the hosting Lady Dragons 32-29 on Dec. 2.
The Lady Eagles hoped to keep their momentum going the following Friday but fell 44-34 to Ste. Genevieve. They gave up third place to Festus in a 54-34 loss.
Head coach Jordan Flora praised his team’s hard work in their first matches. He believes that Sullivan’s strong chemistry could become an even greater threat later down the road. “I felt that we became more confident each game we played,” Flora shared. “We moved the ball very well and played extremely unselfish each game. We had different players score for us each night and that’s something that will make us harder to guard as we get deeper in the season.”
The coach is also proud to see all his players step up when the opportunity arises. Flora said, “With us being on the younger side with seven sophomores, they all contributed in different ways and learned a lot over the past few games. Our leadership from our older girls has been great to see, and the way our team has come together the past couple games is exciting and fun to coach.”
Sullivan hopes to improve their ball control before returning home for the Peoples Bank Holiday Classic. Their coach explained, “We are averaging a few more turnovers than we would like. We also need to focus on finishing our layups and close shots. We had some really good scoring opportunities this past week, but we just need to start capitalizing on them.”
The Lady Eagles will finish their road trip at Fox this Friday and begin their homestand next week. They are seeded sixth at their home eight-team tournament.
Sullivan will face No. 3 St. Pius X in the opening round on Monday, Dec. 16, at 8:30 p.m. Two days later, the Lady Eagles resume hoop action, playing at 8:30 p.m. (win) or 5:30 p.m. (loss).
The championship will be held at 6:30 p.m. on the following Friday. The seventh-place game will be at 2 p.m., the consolation game will follow at 3:30 p.m. and the third-place matchup will be at 5 p.m.
De Soto
In the opening round, the Lady Eagles showed they can overcome adversity. They seized their first win of the season with their backs against the wall.
Sullivan trailed 9-1 to De Soto at the end of the first quarter. Despite being on the ropes, the Lady Eagles rallied and stunned the Lady Dragons for the 32-29 victory.
