Football Gives Hermann First Loss Of Season

Sullivan’s football team (3-3) stunned Hermann (5-1) in a 20-12 road win on Friday, Oct. 4. They handed the Bearcats their first loss of the season.

After the upset, the Eagles held a 3-1 record in their conference. They will continue Four Rivers play against St. James and Owensville in their next two matches.

Sullivan head coach Eddie Haar stated he was “really proud” of his team for the victory and the defense for their best performance so far this season. He hopes to keep the momentum going and finish the regular season on a high note. Haar said, “In our final three regular season games, I want us to take [our opponents] one game and one play at a time and continu[e] to get better so we can be playing our best once districts hit!”

The Eagles heavily used their ground game, rushing for 283 yards.

Mark Jennings played lights out, scoring all twenty points for Sullivan. He led with 109 yards, averaging 5.45 per carry.

Chase Blue powered through to 86 yards on 16 rushes.

Quarterback Robert York II scrambled for 77 yards on four sneaks.

Nathan Garcia picked up nine yards, while Nathan Garcia gained two.

Near the end of the first quarter, York broke up a Hermann pass in the end zone for a fourth down stop. The Eagles returned on their 15-yard line and gradually moved the chains. Jennings slipped past the Bearcats for 13 yards, and Blue dodged them for a first down. Jennings rushed for five yards through a gap, then crossed the plane. He put the Eagles on top 6-0 three minutes into the second quarter.

Sullivan intercepted Hermann’s hopes to tie it up. Bearcat quarterback Henry Allebach fired a pass into traffic, and Mitchell Garner snagged it. The junior linebacker sprinted from midfield to inside the five-yard line. Jennings capitalized on the turnover to rush in a second touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Hermann struggled to find their momentum on offense. They received the second-half kickoff but were unable to punch in a score. York made another fourth-down halt as he outsmarted the Bearcats on a wildcat formation.

Sullivan closed out the third quarter with their final trip to the end zone. York placed the Eagles in plus territory on a 40-yard scramble while plowing through Bearcats. Jennings zigzagged his way to the house again, cushioning a 20-point lead on 15 yards.
