Football Crushes Cougars 55-21 In Quarterfinal

Sullivan (6-4) kept their postseason alive, stifling the Cougars (2-8) 55-21 on Friday, Nov. 1. The Eagles buried seventh-ranked Affton with 49 unanswered points in the first half of the Class 4 District 2 Quarterfinal. The junior varsity players finished the game, defending Sullivan’s No. 2 seed.

The Eagles will continue their homestead when rematching third-seeded Pacific (5-5) this coming Friday. Sullivan beat the Indians 50-36 earlier this season but lost the district title to them in 2023.

Head coach Eddie Haar wants Sullivan to maintain high intensity but keep past feelings from overcoming the game. He said, “We have to be all business; can’t let emotions get too high and lose focus. So, I want us to be excited but able to control our emotions as well.”

Sullivan tore up the gridiron with 369 rushing yards against the Cougars.

Parker Montee pounded up the gut for Sullivan’s first points on the board. The senior picked up three yards on two carries.

Mark Jennings led the Eagles on the ground with 145 yards, averaging 29 per his five carries. He took it to the house twice, which included an 83-yard touchdown to cap off the first quarter.

Chase Blue put on a clinic with 113 yards on eight rushes. The junior crossed the plane twice, punching in fourteen points.

Robert York II passed for a season-high 108 yards in the first half. His first strike was a 42-yarder to Seth Valley in the endzone. R. York connected with Valley again on a 51-yard bomb that set Sullivan up for their final score before halftime. The senior also scrambled in a touchdown and intercepted Affton. Haar named his quarterback the Monster Player of the Game.

Valley led Sullivan with 93 receiving yards, and Cameron York caught a reception for 15.

The junior varsity Eagles got to play under the Friday night lights in the second half.

Mahlon Foster took over quarterbacking duties. He floated a 29-yard pass to Brennan Koepke and dove through the goal line for Sullivan’s final touchdown.

Blake Watson played lights out with 46 yards on two carries. His longest rush was 25 yards, breaking through tackles to set the Eagles in plus territory.

Hayden Oldham trucked defenders for 34 yards, Nathan Garcia picked up 13 and Foster snuck for eight.

Kicker Josiah Tanner booted seven of his eight extra-point attempts through the uprights.

Two other district matchups took place on Friday. Third-seeded Pacific crushed sixth-ranked Bayless/Hancock (2-8) by a score of 56-6.

No. 4 Union (42-7) blanked fifth-ranked Roosevelt (3-7) 34-0. The Wildcats will face undefeated Gateway (9-0) in hopes of upsetting their top seed.
