Eagles Lose Grip Of Wildcats In Semifinal
The Eagles (18-10) were tested when they kicked off Final Four play on Wednesday, Jun. 4. They dropped their Class 4 Semifinal round to Logan-Rogersville (31-8) in an 11-2 loss.
Sullivan showed grit in a three-hour battle that was delayed due to inclement weather. The Eagles scored in the top of the third and fifth but failed to keep the Wildcats off the board in each inning.
Both teams tied for the same number of hits at eleven and strikeouts at seven. Logan-Rogersville outperformed Sullivan with 8 RBIs and six walks. The Eagles batted in two runs and walked to first base four times.
Mitchell Garner went a perfect 4-for-4 and drove Landen Doza home for the first RBI. He led the Eagles with three singles while also doubling and stealing a base.
Doza went 2-for-2 at the plate, landing two singles, a stolen base, a run and a walk.
Nate McReynolds belted an RBI single to bring in Braxton ‘Skib’ Breen for Sullivan’s second score. The senior batted 1-for-2 while racking up a stolen base and a walk.
Alex Toews singled twice in his three at-bats and walked once.
Raiden Redd (1-for-4) doubled on a line drive, and Brody Gawer (1-for-4) singled on a ground ball.
Chase Blue took a walk to first base. He had three at-bats alongside Drake Gawer and Seth Valley, while Mahlon Foster and Lucas Parsons each had one.
D. Gawer pitched his swan song as an Eagle against Logan-Rogersville. The senior powered six strikeouts while giving up six hits, five earned runs and five walks.
Mahlon Foster came in for relief in the bottom of the fourth. He struck out a batter and surrendered two hits.
Isaiah ‘Dirty Dan’ Skaggs took his final trip to the mound for Sullivan in the sixth inning. The senior gave up three earned runs, two hits and a walk.
Grant Halmick also threw the last pitches of his high school career against the Wildcats. He was the closer for the Eagles and only gave up a hit.
In the second Class 4 Semifinal match, the Trailblazers (22-7-1) trailed 6-0 until they blazed up their comeback in the fifth inning. Father Tolton picked up two more runs, then later trimmed their deficit to one. Chillicothe (23-12) responded by cushioning an 8-6 lead, and the Trailblazers failed to answer back in the top of the seventh.
The Hornets went on to battle the Wildcats in the Class 4 Championship. Chillicothe led by eight runs until Logan-Rogersville began rallying back in the bottom of the fourth. The Wildcats cut their deficit to two, but Chillicothe hung on to win 9-7 and seize their first-ever state title.
