Eagles Finish Third In FRC Tourney

The Sullivan baseball team is off to a great start this season. After a devastating loss to Union on Monday, Sullivan bounced back to take third against St. Clair. St. Clair defeated Owensville and suffered a loss to Pacific in their first two games of the tournament. Sullivan defeated Hermann in their first round then was defeated by Union. Sullivan was victorious over the St. Clair Bulldogs on Wednesday, 3-0.

Drake Gawer and Gavin Schmidt combined pitching help shut out the Bulldogs to claim third place in the 2023 Four Rivers Conference baseball tournament. Gawer gave up the only hit to the Bulldogs and struck them out ten times. Schmidt tallied one strike out and didn’t give up a single hit.

In the second inning, Sullivan scored their first run. Chase Blue hit a line drive single and the next batter hit him into a double play. A two out rally came, when Gawer slammed a ground ball to right. Alex Toews came in as a courtesy runner and Seth Valley hit a line drive single to advance Toews. Toews scored when Jordan Rice hit a ground ball single to left.

In the third inning, the Eagles scored their last two runs to secure the win. Schmidt singled on a line drive and stole second. Dayton Skaggs was walked and then he stole second after Schmidt stole third. Schmidt scored a run when he stole home and Chase Blue was hit by the pitch. The two runners stole bases and Skaggs was scored when Lucas Parsons hit a successful sacrifice ground ball.

Gawer and Schmidt both went 2-3 at the plate besides being stellar on the mound. Valley, Rice and Blue each recorded a hit as well.
