Dutchmen Comeback Stuns Eagles

Owensville stunned Sullivan on Friday, coming back from a 5-2 deficit in the seventh inning to walk off the Eagles 6-5 and win the Class 4 District 4 championship.

The Dutchmen claimed the title on their home turf.

The Eagles were three outs from winning their first district title since 2015 when they went on a Cinderella run to the Class 3 championship game.

Friday was the closest they had been to reaching the state tournament since that time.

The Eagles suffered several district setbacks, but after walking off Salem in the semifinals four days earlier, had their chance against the top-seeded Dutchmen.

Sullivan scored in the first inning on a RBI single by Dayton Skaggs.

Owensville would tie the game, but Gavin Schmidt snapped it with a run-scoring single in the third, putting the Eagles up 2-1.

Sullivan added to their lead with two runs in the fifth.

With runners on the corners and no outs, Owensville brought in Michael Steinbeck. Steinbeck balked, which scored the runner from third.

Cambrian Koch’s sacrifice bunt scored another run to put the Eagles up 4-1.

The Dutchmen got a lead off double in the home half of the fifth. Lucas Parsons lost the ball in the sun and one batter later, Owensville scored to cut the deficit to 4-2.

In the top of the sixth, Parsons reached base on an error. Jordan Rice then lined a single.

With two outs, Seth Valley was walked and the bases were loaded. Another Owensville error on a batted ball by Koch gave the Eagles another run.

Sullivan took a 5-2 lead into the seventh.

Parsons was called in to close out the game. He allowed a pair of runs as Owensville closed the gap to 5-4.

Head Coach Ian Whitson called for a pitching change and brought in Koch.

He walked two batters, then Logan Evans dropped in a walk-off single to give the Dutchmen the district championship.
