DeSoto Snaps Sullivan’s Twenty-One-Year Winning Streak With Buzzer-Beater

Sullivan (1-10) experienced a heartbreaking 41-40 defeat in a thrilling shootout against DeSoto (7-9) on Thursday, Jan. 11.

The Eagles rallied back and nearly secured the victory, but in the final moments, the Dragons executed a buzzer-beating miracle to win the game. DeSoto point guard Cole McClinton sailed in a three-pointer just as the ticks on the scoreboard were running out. His team and peers rushed onto the court, surrounding McClinton and cheering him on for snapping Sullivan’s twenty-one-year winning streak against them.

Before Thursday, Sullivan had won two of their previous games against the Dragons; one was last season, and the other was ten years before. The last time the Eagles fell to DeSoto was 21 years ago, in 2003.

Sullivan made 51.9% (14-27) of their field goals and 58.3% (7-12) free throws. They tallied up 26 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals.

Junior guard Chris Glaser led the charge with a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds, recording a 7-13 field-goal ratio, two assists and two steals.

Senior guard Matthew Mallory contributed nine points, a rebound and an assist, making 2-2 field goals and 3-7 free throws.

Senior forward Max Avery racked up six points, six rebounds, two steals and an assist, with a near-perfect 4-5 free throw ratio and a 1-3 field goal ratio.

Junior guard Seth Valley collected six rebounds and two points.

Sophomore forward Mitchell Garner pulled off eight rebounds, 2 points, two assists and two steals.

Sophomore guard Peyton Malady grabbed three steals, two points and two rebounds.
