Boys Wrestling Enters New Year On Top

The varsity boys capitalized on strong finishes in Jefferson City to enter Winter Break on top. Sullivan wrapped up 2024 at the Steve Johnson Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 21, battling twelve other squads. The Eagles landed second and scored 23.5 after grappling with tough competition. 

Eli Peregoy (12-0), Ian Henderson (14-0) and Carter Blankenship (14-2) were the champions of their classes. 

Ethan Turner (10-5) medaled with silver, and Oliver Borton (7-6) took home bronze.

Brodyn Huebner (2-4) and Brennan Birrer (8-6) landed fourth at the state capital.

Austin Ray (11-6) and Lucas Hunter (1-8) finished fifth, while Nathan Garcia (5-11) ranked sixth.

The junior varsity boys wrestled at the Brentwood Invitational on the same Saturday. Read the tournament results on page 2C.

Match Summaries

Peregoy (138) led the Eagles with 21 points in his first-place finish. He swept his four challengers: Ethan Gonzales (Jefferson City JV) in an 11-1 major decision, Jalen Fortner (Hazelwood Central) in a 0:41 pin, as well as D’Andre Watts (Jefferson City) in 11-3 and 13-3 rulings. 

Henderson (106) ran the table in his class, going 3-0 with 19 points. He beat Joseph Anderson (Jefferson City) in a forfeit, Brodie Zeller (Stover) in a 17-5 major decision and Tyler Dumas (Hallsville) in a 0:40 fall.

Blankenship (126) clinched the top of the podium with a 4-0 record and 18 points. He pinned Kamdin Horne (Jefferson City) in 1:22, Kolton Dunwiddie (Jefferson City JV) in 1:02, Alias Murrary (Stover) in 0:48 and Dane Rogers (Parkway Central) in 0:46.

Turner (175) was the runner-up in his class, tallying 18 points and going 3-2. He first took down Luke Mosley (Jefferson City) in 3:14 and Anden Murrary (Stover) in 2:31. The junior lost his following two rounds to Ali Mohsen (Parkway Central) in 5:32 and Justin Mitchell (Normandy Collaborative) in 0:08. Turner rebounded to win his final bout, trapping Cobie Cooper (Hallsville) in 1:06.

Borton (144) medaled with bronze, winning four of his five matches for 13.5 points. He first dominated Preston Proskocil (Hallsville) and Dustin Koeller (Stover JV) in technical falls, then edged past Cody Parnell (Aurora) in a 9-8 decision. Borton lost his fourth round in a 15-12 ruling to Brady Becker (Parkway Central). The junior bounced back to win his last duel, delivering a 23-7 technical fall over Logan Scott (Stover).
