Baseball Takes Final Bow At Class 4 State Sectionals

The Eagles (18-10) and MICDS Rams (17-6) locked horns in the Class 4 Sectional 2 game on Tuesday, May 21. Sullivan struggled to ram through the District 3 winner and was knocked out of the state playoffs at home, ending another monumental season. The Eagles hoped to keep up their momentum after rallying for their second consecutive district title a week before.

Against MICDS, Sullivan tallied five hits, three walks and an RBI with 25 batting appearances.

Landen Doza was the only Eagle to land home. The freshman also recorded a hit.

Drake Gawer drove Doza in for his score with an RBI on his hit. He was also Sullivan’s starting pitcher and pounded eight strikeouts in five innings. He allowed five hits, four earned runs and four walks. Gawer finished the season with all-district honors and was unanimously selected for first-team all-conference.

Nate McReynolds took the mound in the bottom of the 6th and only gave up a hit. He ended the year with second-team all-conference honors.

Cambrian Koch executed a team-high two hits. He was awarded with second-team all-conference and all-district honors.

Gavin Schmidt and Seth Valley both took a walk against the Rams. Schmidt unanimously made first-team all-conference, and Valley earned all-district honors.

Starting catcher Dayton Skaggs made the all-district team for an outstanding senior performance behind home plate this season.

Chase Blue racked up a hit and a walk in the state sectional round.

Despite the Eagles’ loss, they had a great season with nail-biting matches, clutch plays and heart-filled moments. This year featured magical moments like Chase Blue’s home run snapping a fifteen-year losing skid to Borgia and the team being able to play on the big stage at Busch Stadium. Next year, Sullivan will look to three-peat at districts and journey deeper into the state playoffs.

This is not the only time the Eagles and Rams have clashed in the sectionals. The first came on May 28, 1992, when the Eagles edged out MICDS 6-4. Four years later, on May 23, they rematched with the Rams and swept them 14-2.
