10/18 Eagle Report

The Sullivan Eagles football team took their 5-2 record to Owensville this past Friday in an effort to remain at the top of District standings. Coach Eddie Haar had some players returning from injury, and was excited about the great week of practice the team had leading up to the game.

But play a game so good that the other team is convinced you’re cheating? The flattery for such a scenario is exactly what took place at Owensville.

During the first half, officials stopped play and escorted senior Colton Brendel to the sideline. Unsure of what was going on and fearing that he was being ejected, Brendel learned that he was being accused of potentially having an earpiece inside of his helmet. He removed his helmet and spun around for game officials, who were then satisfied that he did not have an illegal listening device installed on his person.

Sullivan would ride the rushing successes of senior Franky Erxleben, finishing with over 130 hard-fought yards on the day. Owensville quarterback Blake Elliott was a visible leader on the field for the Dutchmen, playing a tough game that included an injury that he became determined to play through.

But at the conclusion of the game, the Sullivan team was again accused of harboring a listening device inside of Brendel’s helmet, this time after the team handshakes. KTUI radio sideline analyst Dave Johnson was able to confirm the nature of the accusation as he witnessed and reported it first-hand on the sidelines. The nature of the accusations were then confirmed to him by Coach Haar.

Brendel again removed his helmet in an attempt to satisfy one of the oddest accusations ever seen on a high school football field. Sullivan won the game 28-7 to improve to 6-2 on the year and remain on top of District standings.

Ashley Crump’s Lady Eagles softball squad headed into the Class 3 District 2 Championship Game with a lot of optimism after a solid outing against Ursuline Academy on Saturday morning. A 14-0 outing against Borgia earlier in the season gave the Lady Eagles further confidence that they could pull off a big District Championship win.

Unfortunately in the prior meeting, the Lady Eagles didn’t get to see pitcher Amanda Dorpinghaus. They however, saw plenty of her on Monday evening.

A couple of tough errors in the field, as well as a home run given up by junior pitcher Ava DeClue contributed to the Lady Eagles downfall. Dorpinghaus struggled to maintain her pitch control into the final two innings, but a 2-0 lead had her in the circle in the seventh, going for the complete game victory for Borgia.

An emotional Borgia dugout hung on every success of the final inning as the Knights were able to hold on and get a huge District Championship.

Ashley Crump’s Lady Eagles softball squad has absolutely nothing to hang their heads about; they were a very good team that played against some very good teams this season. The two outgoing seniors Hayli Venable and Morgan Braun will leave with a boatload of memories that they’ll be able to carry with them the rest of their lives, and of course with the opportunity to come and support future teams.
