“We know he's quick. We've seen him in our car. We know that he can drive a car fast. We had a flight at 11am, so I slept for five hours, which didn’t help because I needed some recovery. But I had to watch the race. I’ve watched it maybe five times now."

"When you're looking after a junior who is 11, you have no idea that they are going to be incredible, or perhaps good, great or average. But, with him, you could see early on in the F4 days that he was developing exceptionally well."

Sergio Perez finds himself at a pivotal juncture in his Formula 1 career as his current contract with Red Bull is due to expire at the end of 2024. The Mexican driver has spoken about the upcoming negotiations with the Austrian team, confirming they have not taken place yet. He commented to Sky Sports F1:

"It's not easy.

"We already saw it in Bahrain. The only driver to put the perfect lap together was Max. He is a driver who operates at a high level without mistakes. Just being able to redeem yourself time after time. You’re only as good as your last race. When I’ve been comfortable with the car and team, I’ve been extremely close to Max. That’s the best I can do. Time will tell if that’s enough. If not, I will be watching at who goes next!"

Perez, who joined the team in 2021, continued:

"I think it’s early to say. I want to wait a few races to see how it goes. It’s not an easy or straightforward seat.

"It has some complications which we’ve seen in the past. We’ve seen great drivers that don’t survive six months or a year. It’s a unique team. I’m in no hurry. I want to see how it goes. With Red Bull, I think it will be a very fast conversation. It will take us five minutes to say what we want to do.

"We cannot take anything away from him [Max Verstappen]. He’s at one with the car. I think Max is at the stage of his career where he has a car that he is 100% comfortable with."

Perez's Red Bull contract will be closely watched this year with other names repeatedly mentioned as possible replacements, including Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, and Alex Albon. If there is a shift within Red Bull it could also have a knock on effect on other teams and junior drivers who are ready to move up, including Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson.

The Australian Grand Prix race week is upon us with the teams and drivers already arriving in Melbourne. 

Going into the third round of the 2024 season, Max Verstappen will be looking to continue his winning streak after securing both victories in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Verstappen's Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, has been closely following the Dutch driver with second-place finishes in both of the opening races. 

Ferrari reserve driver Ollie Bearman replaced Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia after requiring surgery for appendicitis. It is currently not clear as to whether the Spanish driver will be able to drive this weekend or if Bearman will stand in once again.

The 2023 Australian Grand Prix was chaotic from start to finish with three red flags and dramatic race re-starts. Verstappen took the win in 2023 followed by Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso who crossed the line in second and third, respectively.

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc is confident that his relationship with teammate Carlos Sainz will not suffer as the two indulge in wheel-to-wheel racing in the second-fastest car on the Formula 1 grid. The Monagasque driver suggested that the team results mattered the most among them, above everything else.

Sainz's approach to his final season is being observed as the Spaniard has disclosed his intention to prioritize his performance to enhance his prospects of securing a seat for the following year when Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton takes over his seat.

Not only that, Sainz's relationship with Leclerc has raised questions, particularly after their close racing encounter in Bahrain, where he executed a daring move up the inside of Leclerc at turn one on Lap 11. This maneuver initiated a spirited duel between the two drivers through the opening corners, ultimately resulting in Sainz securing third place behind both Red Bulls.

However, Leclerc clarified to the media Ferrari comes above everything else for both drivers. He said:

"We are always trying to fight on the limit, but obviously keeping in mind that Ferrari comes first and we cannot take unnecessary risks.

"From my side, I wasn't really in a position to be fighting properly as we had quite a few issues to manage, but at the end [of the day], it is a balance and sometimes we might go a bit more over the limit and be a bit too aggressive."

Talking about his relationship with Sainz, he added: 

"We'll then have a discussion and recentre it, and that is what we have done in the years we have been competing together, but I don't remember any time where it went as far as having a problem between us.

"It is a good thing and should stay that way, but I have no doubt on that.

"We also have a very good relationship outside of the car, so we are very open and very honest with ourselves, and have this discussion very often.

"It is all about finding the right balance, but I think we did."

Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson, who debuted in Formula 1 last season, has offered an update on his F1 future as he waits for a full-time racing opportunity, not from any other team but only from Red Bull.

Lawson revealed his plan to Speedcafe, suggesting that there is no fixed timeline on his table and that he still feels like a rookie despite finishing five GPs last year. He stated:

“Honestly, there’s no set timeline for my future.

 “There’s nothing set in stone, obviously, with my future.

“Basically, for me, it’s about staying ready and hopefully we have some opportunity coming.

“I still feel like a rookie. It’ll basically be mostly simulator work and then going to all the races with the team as a reserve.”

Given that the contracts of Ricciardo, Tsunoda, and Red Bull driver Sergio Perez are set to expire after the 2024 season, Lawson stands a strong chance of securing one of the seats.

Bearman's impressive run in Jeddah with a P7 finish was the talk of the town, good enough to even overshadow Max Verstappen's victory in Saudi Arabia. After all, the F2 driver was the youngest ever to race in the premier class of motorsport. 

The young driver's struggle from the race day became evident the following day when his F2 colleagues noted his stiffness. Given that he endured forces of up to 5G for approximately 90 minutes and completed 50 laps on one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar, the impact on the F1 debutant would have been easily noticeable.

Speaking about the beating his body too during the race, he told the The Times:

Most of the pain was from my lower back. The neck is a given, but Jeddah is one of the most difficult tracks. Even the straights, they twist quite a bit, which doesn’t look much, but when you repeat it 50 times, there’s no rest.

"F1 cars are very tight and not built for comfort. Everything was very last minute. When I made the seat, I didn’t think I’d be having to use it."

Revealing the difference in comfort between an F1 and an F2 car, Bearman added:

"We don’t have as much downforce or G-force in F2, so the strain is much less. But we don’t have power steering in F2, so the steering work is super-heavy. When I’ve finished an F2 race, my arms are usually tired, but apart from that I’m fine. In F1, the steering is very light, but it’s everything else. You’re just getting thrown around. Muscles you don’t feel like you’re engaging, they’re aching the next day.

"It’s exhausting; you lose a lot of water, I couldn’t believe how sweaty I was. It was a big challenge. But I really enjoyed it."

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which is under threat of being canceled from the Formula 1 calendar, has received an investment worth €50 Million to "modernize" and "adapt the circuit to new requirements".

The current contract permitting Barcelona to host Formula 1 races lasts until 2026. Beyond the period, it receives a significant threat from the new track in Madrid, located about six hours away. While F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has not confirmed Barcelona's exclusion from the sport, its current contract status and Madrid's addition post-2026 puts it in a worrisome spot. 

However, there is a silver lining as there is a chance of Spain hosting two Grands Prix to satisfy both circuits. Although this option may raise numerous uncertainties, particularly with Formula 1 preparing to introduce several new race tracks that are unfamiliar to the F1 calendar, the idea might appear challenging.

Feeling confident that the plan to upgrade the facility would secure its position on the calendar, circuit director Josep Lluis Santamaria told Motorsport.com Italy:

“I don’t see why two Formula 1 Grands Prix cannot coexist in Spain in the future, there are three in the United States and two in Italy, and there can be two here as well.

“We are sportsmen and, of course, we like competition, so you can’t hide the fact that when you compete you have stimuli. But we have always said that the work we are completing started much earlier, more than two years ago, and was the result of agreements made with F1.”

The official statement from the circuit management stated the goal of the infrastructure overhaul. It read:

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack has revealed Fernando Alonso's qualities that set him apart as a racing driver. More like an old fox, the Spaniard not only brings to the team enough speed, but a host of other things through his 20+ years of experience in Formula 1. Thus, the team boss revealed his intent to retain the 42-year-old driver in the outfit for the future.

“We've seen that last year already when he joined.

“It's not only what he brings in terms of proven talent and racecraft; that, I think, we don't have to discuss. He brings this extra to the team, driving and pushing and motivating everybody. And leading by example, from the first moment in the morning to late at night, which is exemplary.

“And this is something that is infecting the whole team, that is something that you want to preserve.”

Alonso's skill in keeping Russell behind during the race in Jeddah was also commended by Krack, highlighting his effective strategy of preventing the Mercedes driver from utilizing DRS for numerous laps. He added:

“It was quite strong.

“We knew George was behind, he had good speed, and we did not want to let him into the DRS. So it was all the time between 1.5 and 1.0 seconds in between them.

“And then it is always how much do I manage, and how much do I push to get to the end? But I think he managed it like probably nobody else can. I don't know where he got the gaps from. In my opinion he was always on top of the situation.”

Highlighting his "old fox" quality when Alonso communicated to his team about the strategy without letting rival teams know, Krack added:

“He asked for the Plan B, basically. ‘Is there a Plan B?’

“Fernando is always teasing you, you have to be careful if he's really honest about it, because he knows all the strategies before, he knows where all the field is. And sometimes he maybe does it even on purpose, because he knows the competitors are listening. So he's an old fox.

“But he always wakes us up. As soon as you think for one lap you can read it, there comes a radio call, and he says, ‘What about Plan B?’, like Fernando always does. So we then had a look at the Plan B, but you will not finish where you finish with Plan B.”

Thus, considering what Alonso brings to the table, Aston Martin is keen on keeping him for 2025 and maybe even beyond, but only after he decides to continue racing in F1. Krack explained:

“It's not a secret that he first of all wants to decide for himself what he wants to do.

“And I think it's also not a secret that I keep saying that we want to continue working with Fernando.

“And I also said that the most important thing is that we give him a quick car. So that he believes in this project, and that he believes in this team, and everything else we will have to discuss over the weeks to come.

“Now, it is clear that a driver of that calibre is attractive for everybody, but we will try to keep him.”

Mercedes driver George Russell revealed that it has been "quite funny" to witness drivers calling Mercedes to fill in Lewis Hamilton's seat in 2025 after his shock announcement to join Ferrari for the next season. The British driver also revealed being approached by other drivers through calls and text messages.

“So it's been quite interesting, but as a team, we're in a really good opportunity and position to go into this next chapter, [after] so much success with Lewis and Mercedes.”

Russell also added that he wasn't concerned about his future teammate as his sole focus remains to perform and lead the team next season. He added:

“It's gonna be an interesting few months to see what happens.

“But from my side, I've been team mates with arguably the greatest driver of all time for the past two years, and I've got no concerns at all who lines up alongside me. I want to be tested against the very best and I feel that's what I've had the last two years.

“Whether it’s an experienced driver or a young driver. I feel that personally, I'm in a great position to help push the team forward and go into this next chapter.”

Since Hamilton's Ferrari announcement last month, several drivers have been linked to a future Mercedes move, such as Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, and even Red Bull driver Max Verstappen!

Dodds takes immense pride in Formula E's competitiveness, which he believes is crucial for the sport's rapid growth. Thus, he is determined to ensure that it steers clear of the predictability often associated with Formula 1. Speaking to the media, he stated:

"I think we've had eight winners in nine seasons, pretty much every season has come down to the last race of the season.

"And if you look at last year alone in London, you had three drivers and three teams that could still win the championship when we get to there, but it's very deliberately done. We know that fans love competitiveness, when competitiveness starts to go, fanbase starts to disappear.

"So we are very fixated on keeping competitive nature high. And I know I made a bit of a bet recently, which you might have seen where I talked about a Max Verstappen guarantee about how he will definitely win.

"And a lot of people at the time said I was being unreasonable. But here we are two for two. And it looks like now the question is can he win all 24? We do not want to be that sport."

Since its establishment in 2014, Formula E has experienced a significant rise in competitiveness, leading to its recognition as the motorsport with the fourth-largest fan base.
