R. Michael Austin, 74, of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 8, 2023.

Robert Michael Sparrell Austin was born on October 19, 1949, to the late Robert and Vera (Berti) Austin in Honolulu, HI. Michael's life was a symphony of artistic expression and his soul a canvas of creativity.

Michael's formative years were spent in the Sullivan School District, where he developed his mastery of the clarinet and other wind instruments, graduating with the class of 1967. His passion for the arts propelled him to further his education at the University of Missouri and the Kansas City Conservatory of Music. It was there that Michael honed his skills as a musician, singer, and songwriter.

His professional life was as diverse and colorful as his personality. Michael released a CD titled "Thick N Thin" and enjoyed a long career in the performing arts. He shone on stage as an actor, director, producer, and cabaret entertainer, primarily in the cultural hubs of Austin, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. His talents extended beyond the stage as he was also a prolific poet and painter, creating abstract and unique art pieces that reflected his keen eye for beauty.

Michael's interests were as varied as his talents. He found solace in the beauty of nature and the companionship of his precious pup, Lou. In his latter years, his faith deepened, and he became an active member of his church choir, lending his voice to their Christmas Cantatas. Michael moved back to Missouri in 2013 to care for his mother, Vera, still taking opportunities to travel back to Texas to perform with his musical colleagues there.

Remembered for his kind and compassionate spirit, Michael was the epitome of an old-world gentleman, always exuding good manners and a love for men's style and fashion. His legacy is one of creativity, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to the arts. Michael's melody may have quieted, but the echoes of his life's work will resonate for years to come.

Michael is survived by his significant other, Elizabeth Hale of Leasburg, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Barbara Austin of Austin, Texas; a nephew, Nick Austin and wife Madison of New Braunfels, Texas; a niece, Elizabeth Austin of New York City, NY; great nephews, Fritz and Milo Austin; four step siblings: Terrance “Terry” Bell of Dumfries, VA, Sharon Key of Sullivan, Missouri, Careen Mincemeyer of Leslie, Missouri and Sally Weeks of Bourbon, MO; many other cousins, relatives and friends.
