Robert Dean Crow, 87, affectionately known as Dean to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in his hometown of Sullivan, Missouri, surrounded by his family. He was born to Fred and Hilda (Collins) Crow on February 15, 1937, on his family’s farm in Washington County. A man of great character and warmth, Dean's presence was a pillar of strength and kindness in the community he loved so dearly.
Dean attended the Reedville school until the 8th grade when he entered school in Sullivan, where he was a proud graduate of the class of 1955.
His formative years on the family farm in Washington County instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and the value of hard work. These early experiences were the foundation of the principles he carried throughout his life.
His family’s move to Sullivan is when he met his future, beloved wife, Alice Schmidt. They were married on February 16, 1957. Together, they were blessed with two daughters, Lisa and Dena, who were the light of his life.
Dean's dedication to his country was evident when he served in the United States Army. Stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama, he proudly served as a fire fighter until his honorable discharge in 1962. He continued his service in the Army Reserves until 1966.
Professionally, Dean was known for his strong work ethic and skill. He spent many years at Pea Ridge Mine, operating heavy equipment with precision and care. When the mine closed, he embraced the opportunity to learn a new trade and earned a certificate in Auto Mechanics from East Central College. He went on to work for Wilson Excavating, where he became well-known in the area for his expertise as a heavy equipment operator. Dean's career culminated with 15 years of dedicated service to the City of Sullivan before he retired in 1999.
Dean's interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. He played basketball in high school and maintained a love for the sport throughout his life, particularly enjoying the excitement of college basketball and the annual tradition of March Madness brackets. A lover of the outdoors, Dean often went fishing and gigging, and he delighted in watching wildlife, taking pleasure in the simple joy of feeding the squirrels and watching the eagles soar up the river.
A true passion of Dean's was the Meramec River. His childhood memories on the farm near the river were cherished, and he continued to enjoy time spent there with his family well into his later years. Farming remained a constant pastime, and he managed a cattle operation even while working full time and raising his family.
Westerns also captivated Dean, often recalling movies that were watched over and over throughout his life. He also enjoyed listening to bluegrass music. Dean was a dedicated blood donor to the Red Cross, contributing hundreds of times over his lifetime. Saving lives through blood donations was very important to him.
Dean’s grandsons brought him immense joy, and he cherished every moment spent together. His character will carry on through them.
