Robert “Bob” Stoops, of Stanton, MO, passed away in the early morning of March 5, 2023, at the age of 87.  Bob was born on December 8, 1935, in Schenectady, NY, to J. Howard and Lucie Stoops. He was the youngest of four children.

In his youth, Bob lived in many places - New York, Delaware, Minnesota, and Indiana.  He would eventually plant his roots in Stanton, MO and call that home.

Bob attended Hanover College in Indiana where he ran track-and-field and majored in Geology.  After graduating, he went on to have a long career with the MO State Highway Department as a Materials Inspector.  After retiring from the State, Bob also served as Postmaster for the Stanton Post Office.

Bob had a wide array of interests and passions in his life… exploring caves, running in marathons, music, travelling, science, history, the U. S. military, camping, black and white movies (with an affinity for the classic horror films and for John Wayne), old sea vessels, pitching for the Highway Dept. softball team, professional and collegiate sports (always rooting for the Giants), locomotives, fossils, and astronomy.  He had a genuine love for nature, wildlife, and conservation.  He was in the outdoors whenever possible, whether it be hiking, planting trees, or canoeing down the river.  Above all, Bob simply loved spending time with his family.

Bob was always willing to lend a helping hand and donated to many charities, especially those for veterans and victims of 9/11.  He was proud of being an American and of his heritage.  He went to great lengths to research and know his ancestors and family tree.  He also liked working with his hands and constructing various things on his property, which over the years included sheds, docks, dams, and a concrete bridge over his creek.  Many fond memories come from his famous Halloween parties which had elaborate decorations, mazes, and fireworks.  Christmastime was also a favorite.  In his later years, Bob could always be spotted enjoying food and fellowship at the Cracker Barrell.  He could easily strike a rapport with a stranger and quickly make a new friend, while telling of his adventures in life and of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his three children – Linda Huelsing (and husband Tim) of St. Louis, MO; David Stoops (and wife Lynne) of Cadet, MO; and Ross Stoops of Springfield, MO.  He is also survived by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and by his brother Bud of Philadelphia, PA.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Priscilla, and his brother Jim.

Any person who ever met Bob will remember his patriotism, sense-of-humor, and unique charm.  He will be sorely missed.  A memorial service and celebration of life will be held later in the year.  Condolences, thoughts, and memories of Bob can be left online at www.eatonfuneralhome.com
