Richard A. Messerly Sr., 67, of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at his home on Saturday, August 27, 2022.

Richard Alan Messerly Sr. was born on January 26, 1955 in Saint Louis, Missouri to John and Evelyn (Seaton) Messerly. He grew up and attended school in the Saint Louis area, and graduated from Roosevelt High.

Richard was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mary Payne, on November 30, 1974. Together they were blessed with two children, Richard Jr. and Amanda. They continued raising their family in Saint Louis while Richard worked for the City of Saint Louis. In 2007, he retired as an inspector for the street department.

After his retirement, Richard and Mary relocated to Sullivan to escape the city life and make their final home. They enjoyed spending time together, vacationing in Florida, taking various cruises, and playing card games at home. Sadly, Mary passed on June 23, 2020.

Richard loved bingo scratch offs and playing the Missouri Lottery. He was such a prankster, often jolly and loved to have fun. Richard was also stubborn, strong-willed, showcased tough love, but was gentle when he needed to be. He was an amazing papa and loved his grandchildren so much. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

Richard is survived by his two children, Richard Messerly Jr. and wife Mina of Burlington, KS and Amanda Wright of Sullivan, MO; seven grandchildren: Nicole Messerly, Anthony Messerly, Isabelle Wright, Victoria Wright, Jordan, Caden and Elizabeth; two sisters, Debbie Gore and husband Doug and Jackie Gastreich and husband Art; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents; a sister, Christine Messerly; and a brother, John Messerly Jr.

Funeral Services were 7 p.m., Friday, September 2, 2022 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor John Blackmore officiating.

Visitation was held from 5 – 7 p.m., Friday, prior to the service at Eaton Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Operation Smile.
