Mary Alice Roy

Mary Alice Roy (Carwile), 97 of Sullivan passed away at her home on Sunday, July 3, 2022.

Mary, daughter of Oscar Carwile and wife Harriet (Lacey) was born November 4, 1924 in East St Louis, Illinois.

She was united in marriage to James W. Roy on July 3, 1942, in Denmark, Arkansas.

Mary was of the Pentecostal faith having attended church from infancy with her father who was Pentecostal minister. 

She was employed in factories including a pecan processing facility and parachute manufacturing in St. Louis as well as housekeeping in nursing homes.

In her spare time, she raised milk goats that she showed in many local fairs and the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, Illinois. She was also an avid genealogist enjoying exploring her family’s history and sharing it with other family members.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Roy; her parents, Oscar and Harriet Carwile; two brothers, Earl Carwile and Jesse Carwile; five sisters, Irene Carwile, Opal Osborne, Julia Mae Griffen, Loraine Rehfeldt and Naomi Osborne.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Alice Faye Brown and husband Eugene of Washington and Peggy Grimm and husband John J of Sullivan; one son, James Roy of Hannibal; five grandsons, Jeffery Brown of Washington, John Grimm Jr. of Collinsville, Illinois, James Grimm of Sullivan, Michael Roy of Hannibal and Arron Roy of Hannibal; one granddaughter, Tracey Cahill of Union: eight great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Visitation was held 12 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2022 at Midlawn Funeral Home, Union with funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment at Midlawn Memorial Gardens, Union. Visit www.midlawn.com for an online register book.
