Herman Mike Franklin, known affectionately as Mike to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2023, at home in Sullivan, Missouri, surrounded by family at the age of 82. Born on July 7, 1941, to Floyd and Edra (Day) Franklin in Marion, Louisiana, Mike's early years were spent in the close-knit community where he attended local schools, graduating from Linville High School in 1959. His strong sense of duty led him to enlist in the US Navy alongside his twin brother, where he honorably served his country until his discharge in 1963.

After his military service, Mike moved to Saint Louis, Missouri, where he worked at McDonnell Douglas. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Betty Jane Smith, on May 28, 1966. Their union was blessed with three children: Danny, Tracy, and Becky. In his twenties, Mike took a bold step by enrolling in the Saint Louis Police Academy, where he graduated high in the ranks. He went on to serve as a Saint Louis policeman before becoming the respected Bourbon Chief of Police, a role in which he protected the community from 1972 – 1982.

Mike's career path took another turn 1982 when he joined Chrysler, where he enjoyed a successful 13-year career. After retirement, Mike stayed busy and went to work for Wallis Companies as a maintenance man for 5 + years. Throughout his life, Mike created long-lasting relationships and made a significant impact on many lives, especially during his tenure as the police chief in Bourbon. Known for his compassion, he often gave young people a second chance and was a staunch advocate for guiding young men towards military service.

A working man at heart, Mike cherished fun family trips to Saint James Park and was a loving and caring father. His earlier years were filled with hunting adventures, and he was an avid sports fan, with a particular love for football and baseball. LSU, Mizzou, The Saints, KC Chiefs, and Cardinals Baseball were among his favorite teams. Mike also found joy in reading, gardening and cherished private family time.

Mike's legacy is one of service, dedication, and love. He touched the lives of many, both as a family man and through his work in the community. His memory will be held dear by those who knew him as a man who stood for what he believed in, who protected and served, and who loved his family above all else. Mike Franklin's life was one well-lived, and his influence will continue to be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
