Doris ‘Bobby’ Cross

Doris “Bobby” Helen Cross, age 92, of Troy, IL, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2021, surrounded by her family.

Doris Helen was born in Zalma, MO, January 4, 1929, to Alonzo F. and Dollie M. (Bond) Shirrell. On June 22, 1946, at just seventeen years old, she married William Walter Cross, in Jonesboro, Illinois. They were blessed with four children: James, Dolly, Sonya, and Jayme.

Doris owned and operated Cross Beauty Shop, on Washington Park in East St. Louis. She was also a caregiver to everyone. Doris loved music, especially George Jones. She and Bill loved to dance together and people would often stop to watch them. Doris also enjoyed sewing and gardening, but most of all, she loved her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by many.

Doris is survived by three of her children: James Cross of Sullivan, MO, Dolly Douglas of Saint Jacob, IL, and Jayme Wieduwilt and husband, James, of Troy, IL; six grandchildren: William “Scott” Pursell and wife, Christy, of Saint Jacob, IL, James Cross and wife, Carolyn, of Sullivan, MO, Misty Paul of Bourbon, MO, Amanda Fruewirth and husband, Eric, of Sullivan, MO, Jessica Snider and husband, Christopher of Halethorpe, MD, and Jacob Wieduwilt and wife, Sarah, of Easton, MD; seventeen great-grandchildren: Benjamin Cross and wife, Elise, Caleb Pursell and wife, Karlin, Brenden Pursell, Andrew Cross, Logan Pursell, Hope Snider, Olivia Paul, Sierra Fruewirth, John Paul, Tucker Fruewirth, Hunter Snider, Maggie Fruewirth, Parker Wieduwilt, Holly Ann Snider, Henry Snider, Hailey Snider and Jude Wieduwilt; one great-great-grandchild on the way; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Walter Cross; one daughter, Sonya Willie Cross; her parents, Alonzo and Dollie Shirrell; two brothers, Jesse Shirrell and Georgie Shirrell; two sisters, Rosella Anderson and Betty Bishop; one daughter-in-law, Neoma Cross; and one son-in-law, Charles Douglas. 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 12, 2021 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, with Pastor Jacob Wieduwilt officiating. Interment followed in Cave Spring Cemetery – Sullivan. 

Visitation was from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, prior to the service at Eaton Funeral Home. 

Memorial contributions in Doris’ memory may be made to Vitas Hospice – Illinois.
