Donald W. Umfress, known affectionately to many as Don, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2024, in Union, MO. He entered this world on October 2, 1946, born to loving parents William and Virginia (Ledbetter) Umfress in the humble town of Braggadocio, MO. Don's life was one characterized by service, family, and faith, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate with those who loved him.

Don dedicated two years of his life, from January 1966 to January 1968, to the United States Marine Corps with valor and commitment, serving his nation during the Vietnam War—a testimony to his courage and patriotism. Following his service, he discovered joy and companionship, having married Joy Surber in 1968, with whom he welcomed three sons into the world: Donald II, Derek, and Brock although their union later dissolved they remained friends and parented their sons together.

Through his professional life, Don's talent as a mechanic, body-man, and painter shone brightly. For more than three decades, from 1973 to 2007, he lent his expertise to Ditch Witch Sales under the employment of the Medlin family, where his commitment to excellence was evident.

Don's passion for life was further expressed through his hobbies. He had an affinity for restoring classic cars, an endeavor that mirrored his appreciation for beauty and attention to detail. Outdoors, he was often found tending to his garden or engaging in his most cherished pastimes: fishing and squirrel hunting. Teaching his sons these skills, Don shared not only his knowledge but also moments that would become treasured memories.

In 1977, Don was saved and baptized at Highway C Full Gospel Church in Bourbon and was a member of the Cuba Church of God for many years where his musical talents contributed to the joy of congregants as part of a singing group, the Kings Messengers.

In 1995 Don would find love again and was married to Carol Waller who preceded him in death in 2014. Their two beloved dogs Puddles and Leggs were their babies. In honor of Puddles and Leggs donations to Open Door Sanctury in House Springs are appreciated.
