Track And Field Kicks Off New Year At Home
Sullivan’s track and field team hit the ground running for a new year on Monday, Mar. 24. They started 2025 at home against St. Clair, Union, Pacific and Bourbon.
Coach Zachary Carey hopes this early season meet will serve as a benchmark for the team. For this year, he stated that Sullivan’s main objective was, “As always, we are trying to continue improving from the beginning of the season with our times and distances and to score as many points in each meet as possible.”
Carey praised his upperclassmen for recently showing “great leadership qualities” in practice. He said, “As far as leadership goes… I was curious to see how this group would respond, and our upperclassmen have done a great job of setting the tone for our practices by holding themselves and our younger classes to a high standard of work ethic and attention to detail.”
At their home meet, Sullivan had seven seniors who individually ranked in the top three.
Zechariah Beagle took first in the 400-meter dash (54.62), and William Hunter finished third (55.16).
Jayson Summers placed first in the 300-meter hurdles (43.08), while Daveah McClain ranked third in the 100-meter competition (17.68).
Robert York II landed first in the javelin, throwing for 47.48 meters.
Aidan Hutchison captured second in the shot put (11.76m) and third in the javelin (37.8m).
Ruby Daily was the runner-up in the shot put, recording a distance of 9.21 meters.
Juniors Katelyne Carpenter was first in the triple jump (9.29m), and Brayden Kisner ranked third in the long jump (5.73m).
Cameron York took second in the discus (34.62m) and third in the shot put (11.63m).
Sullivan’s coaches are also excited to develop the underclassmen into being the best they can be. Carey shared, “We are a fairly young team this year, so as far as mental qualities I am looking for, [it] is to not get down on themselves after a poor performance or to continually compare themselves to others. I am more focused on the process of getting better each practice and each meet.”
Three sophomores clinched the top three spots in their individual events. Carter Rochleau landed first in the high jump (1.7m), while Brennan Koepke won bronze in the 110-meter hurdles (18.36).
Abigail Erfurth dominated with a second-place finish in the discus (27.38m) and third in the shot put (8.79 m).
Freshman Brynn Parsons won the 100-meter dash (14.11), while Riley Rulo followed in second (14.16). Rulo was also the runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles (58.75).
