Tommy J. Garner, 65 of Sullivan, MO, passed away Monday, September 30, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family.

Tommy Joe was born on May 24, 1959, the fifth of eight children born to Vernon Lee and Lonita Jane (King) Garner in Sullivan, MO.  He was united in marriage to Cheryl Marie Rothmeier on March 14, 1981.  Tommy's life was further enriched by the birth of two devoted sons, Josh and Jeremy.

Born with a common knowledge of machinery and a passion for hard work, Tommy spent his formative years contributing to the hum of the Tri County Truck Stop as he honed his skills. His talent flourished as a mechanic at Meramec Tire for a decade.  Further extending his expertise, Tommy joined the team at Walmart in 1993, where for twenty years he was a valued employee, first in automotive and later, ensuring the Lawn and Garden department thrived with the same dedication that he approached all aspects of his life.

Education was a lifelong endeavor for Tommy. Though not formal, his education was gained through tireless work, an incredible ability to connect with others, and his love for family and life’s simple enjoyments. Deeply social, he would strike up conversations with anyone, cementing his reputation as a man who truly never met a stranger.

In his younger days, Tommy enjoyed fishing, however, music was his sanctuary, with the melodic storytelling of Neil Diamond and the haunting presence of Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac stirring his soul. Tommy was also a ham radio operator, his handle was “Shifter”.

Above all, Tommy found his greatest joy in life's simple pleasures - grilling, smoking meats, and sharing stories with his brothers. His presence will be deeply missed, and the legacy of warmth and kindness he fostered will resonate through the cherished memories held by those who loved him.

Tommy is survived by his wife Cheryl Garner of Sullivan, MO; two sons, Joshua Garner and wife Nicole and Jeremy Garner and wife Billie Jean all of Sullivan, MO; his mother Lonita Garner of Sullivan; six grandchildren; Margaret Garner and fiancé Wyatt Smith, Matthew Garner, Nicholas Garner, Andrew Garner,  Brianna  Garner and Liam Garner; one great-grandchild, Kol Smith with one on the way; three brothers, Carl Garner and wife Cindy, Benjamin Garner and Andy Garner all of Sullivan, MO; sister-in-law, Donita Krueger of Sullivan, MO; nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
