Mary L. Ackerman, 56, of Sullivan, Missouri passed away peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2024 at Mercy Hospital – Saint Louis.

Mary Lisa Ackerman was born November 7, 1967 to Ray L. Sr. and Marlene Jane (Dace) Schatz in Sullivan, Missouri.

Mary grew up and attended school in Sullivan, graduating from Sullivan High School in 1986. She was an exemplary student, actively participating in the National Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, FFA, Band, and Student Council. Her commitment to education led her to Southeast Missouri State University, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, setting the stage for her future as a beloved teacher.

After college, Mary returned to Sullivan, where she began a fulfilling career as a fourth-grade teacher. For over two decades, she dedicated herself to her students, nurturing their growth with the same love and attention as if they were her own children. Her passion for teaching was evident in the way her eyes lit up when her students grasped new concepts—a true educator at heart.

Mary was united in marriage to Richard Ackerman, on September 25, 1993. Their union was blessed with a son, Zach, who brought immense joy and pride to Mary's life. Sadly, Richard and Mary would later divorce. In addition to her teaching career, Mary also worked at Walmart from 1986 to 1999, where she made countless friends and connections within the community.

A woman of deep faith, Mary was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Sullivan. Her spiritual journey was marked by her dedication to serving others, whether through mission trips, volunteering at vacation Bible school, assisting with the teens ministry, or attending church camp. Her church family was a source of great comfort and fellowship throughout her life.

Mary was an avid traveler, with a special fondness for “The Cabin” in Canada. Her love for her family was paramount, and she cherished every moment spent with them, whether it was playing games, enjoying music, or simply being in their presence. An ardent reader, Mary also found solace in the pages of a good book, and she took great pleasure in tending to her flower garden and embracing the beauty of the outdoors.

The “Dace Girls”, a group of close-knit cousins, with Mary as the “Caboose”, and “The Crew”, held a special place in Mary’s heart. Together, they shared life joys and sorrows, creating memories that Mary treasured throughout her life.

Mary's legacy is one of love, compassion, and a deep commitment to enriching the lives of those around her. Her impact on the students she taught, the family she adored, and the community she served will be felt for generations to come.

Mary is survived by her son, Zachary Ackerman and fiancé Amanda Westholter and her two daughters, Brooklyn and Madison and a precious grandson, Quinn Ackerman all of Union, Missouri; her beloved brother, Ray L.
