SHS Track And Field Rewrites The Books
Sullivan’s track and field team broke new ground in 2024, hanging up new records on the board.
The boys won their first conference championship in fifty-three years, and the girls rose to the top of the podium in each of their fourteen tournaments.
Sullivan had seven athletes who qualified for the Class 4 State Championship: Mariah Denney, Robert York, Breanna Mayberry, Karlee Head, Eva Heady, Abram Denney and Wyatt Kraus.
M. Denney made her mark in the high school record books by setting new times in the 400m dash (59.14), 800m run (2:18.87) and 1600m (5:15.59). The freshman medaled at state after finishing 7th in the 800m run and 8th in the 1600m. At sectionals, M. Denney took second place in the 800m and fourth in the 1600m.
York also made history at state by throwing a record-breaking 57.67 meters in the javelin and landing a second-place finish. He was also the sectional and district champion.
The 4x400m relay team made it to state after finishing fourth at sectionals and setting a personal best time of 3:07.79. Mayberry, Head, M. Denney, and Heady were the runners who passed the baton for Sullivan.
Heady and A. Denney advanced to Jefferson City in their sectional events, marking new personal records. Heady took third in the triple jump at 11.07 meters, and A. Denney finished fourth in the 1600m run at a time of 4:27.95.
