Joan Sue Mathews, 88, of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in her hometown of Sullivan, the same place where her story began on July 29, 1935. Born to her parents, John and Elnora (Flanagin) Harmon, Joan's life was one of dedication, love, and an unwavering spirit that left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.

Joan's early years were spent in the nurturing environment of Sullivan, where she attended local schools and blossomed into a young woman of ambition and grace. A proud graduate of Sullivan High School in 1953, Joan's thirst for knowledge and self-improvement led her back some years later to academia, where she earned a Clerical Certification in Business from East Central College. This achievement would later serve as a cornerstone of her professional life.

In the summer of 1955, Joan's life was forever changed when she married the love of her life, John E. Mathews, on August 18. The couple was blessed with two children, Deborah and John Jr., and their family became the center of Joan's world. After brief stints in St. Louis and Leasburg, MO the Mathews family settled on the Flanagin family farm in Sullivan in 1964, where Joan dedicated herself to raising her children with love and care.

Once her children had grown, Joan re-entered the workforce with vigor, channeling her keen intellect and management skills into a rewarding 22-year career with MidWest Petroleum. Her dedication to her role was evident, and she became a respected figure within the company. When the need arose, Joan took early retirement to provide care for her beloved John before his passing in 2006, showcasing her selfless nature and deep commitment to family.

Joan's service to her community was exemplified by her volunteer work as a Pink Lady at Missouri Baptist Hospital-Sullivan. Her friendly demeanor and wise counsel were a comfort to many during her time there, embodying the passion she had for helping others.

Life for Joan was not all work, however. She had a passion for dance, with the Jitterbug and Polka being her favorites. Her love for music and movement brought joy to many gatherings. Joan also found pleasure in the simple pastimes of playing cards and bingo with her friends, and the occasional thrill of the penny/nickel slot machines. A true nature enthusiast, Joan loved to tend to her garden, taking pride in canning the vegetables she grew with her own hands.

Travel held a special place in Joan's heart, with fond memories of trips west to Wyoming, Colorado, and Oklahoma, where she visited relatives and embraced the beauty of the American landscape. Ever the savvy shopper, Joan was known for her ability to sniff out a great deal, a testament to her wise money management skills.

Above all, Joan's love for her grandchildren knew no bounds. She was immensely proud of each of their achievements and cherished every moment spent with them.
