Boys Wrestling Lands 2nd At Districts With Eleven State Qualifiers

Sullivan finished 2nd place with 222.5 points at the Class 2 District 1 boys’ wrestling tournament they hosted from Feb. 16–17. They boasted eleven state qualifiers out of thirteen wrestlers who competed. Ste. Genevieve emerged as the district winner.

The Eagles had three individual district champions: sophomore Camden Henderson (33-8) in the 113 class with 26 team points, then seniors Dominic Ransom (29-7) in the 144 class and Colton Brendel (36-4) in the 165 class, who both shared 24.5 points.

Sullivan head coach Carl Lawrence was proud of the three boys for each of their efforts, saying, “I have to give credit to Camden Henderson for being dominant throughout the tournament, Dominic Ransom for getting his title even after a serious injury earlier this season, and of course Colton Brendel for staying focused on his dreams and making them reality.”

The 2nd place finishers were junior Carter Blankenship (27-13), who racked up 20 points in the 120 class; junior Conner Roach (32-3), who tallied 19.5 points in the 132 class; junior Eli Peregoy (12-2), who had 22 points in the 138 class; and senior Dayton Skaggs (23-14), who scored 18 in the 190 class.

Sophomore Oliver Borton (26-17) landed 3rd in the 126 class with 16.5 points, while senior Adam Peregoy (37-7) finished 3rd in the 150 class with 19.5 points. Lawrence also praised these two for their performances, stating, “Oliver Borton has to be commended with his absolute commitment to himself, that nothing is stopping him from going to state. [As well as] Adam Peregoy, staying positive throughout a very tough 150 bracket and punching his ticket to state.”

The last two state qualifiers were senior Jeremiah Rodriguez (13-11), who ranked 3rd in the 215 class with 18 points, and senior Kane Strehl (25-21), who placed 4th in the 175 class and earned 11 points.

The placements for sophomore Austin Ray (13-17) in the 157 class and junior Nolan Center (24-12) in the 285 class were unknown.

After winning four tournament titles and the conference championship, Sullivan will end their action-packed season at the Class 2 state tournament on Feb. 21–22 hosted at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
