Sullivan Shows Grit In 1-0 Loss To Jays

Boys soccer (6-13) fell 1-0 against a tough Jefferson City team (4-9-3) on Wednesday, Oct. 11. A score was not made until the 2nd overtime when the Jays clutched the game-winning penalty kick.

After the game, head coach Brian Immekus told his team that they had earned their respect from the Jays and that he was proud of how they fought until the very end.

“In soccer you have to defend as a team. If you don’t, your back line will get put in unfair situations and I think we did a good job of that,” head coach Brian Immekus said when describing their performance. “We were under pressure all night, but the boys were up to the task and contested everything all over the field.”

Eagles goalie Matthew Hamblin had 13 saves while filling in for the usual starter, Alex Toews.

Despite the Eagles not seeing much offensive time, Kaden Smith pulled off a shot, while he and Eli Peregoy each picked up a corner.

Immekus is hoping that games like these will serve as stepping stones for Sullivan to be prepared for districts.

“The most important thing we need to improve on before districts is moving the ball forward as a team, focusing on staying connected and playing more of a possession game,” he explained.

Sullivan has the #3 seed in their district and will compete in the quarterfinals against the #6 seed Roosevelt/Carnahan on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. in Clayton. The district semifinal will then be held on Monday, Oct. 30 at 4:15 p.m. and the championship will take place on Nov. 2 at 5 p.m.

Boys’ soccer has three games remaining in the regular season. They will play Valley Park for Senior Night on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. The Eagles will face Festus at home on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 5 p.m and on the following day, they will play  in Warrenton at 6:45 p.m.
