Shirley Gene Marie Ertl

Shirley Gene Marie Ertl (nee Dillon) of Bourbon MO passed away on July 15, 2023 at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 10 days. Shirley Ertl was born one of six children on March 5, 1935 in St. Louis Missouri to the late Maurice Anthony Dillon and Mary Louise (Koeberlein) Dillon.
Shirley graduated from Bourbon High School in 1955, and moved to St. Louis and became a telephone switchboard operator for several years before marrying James “Jim” Ertl on September 11, 1965. They welcomed one son, John Francis Ertl into the family.
Jim and Shirley loved doing everything together from traveling to many states, to watching the St. Louis Cardinals baseball games, watching shows at both the Muny and the Fox Theatre as well as attending as many games to support the Bourbon Warhawks. Shirley was a tremendous homemaker and excellent cook always keeping her family cared for and well fed. She was a caring, thoughtful person always known for sending cards for all occasions. Shirley also enjoyed crossword puzzles. Jim and Shirley were members of the St. Anthony’s Parish in Sullivan.
Shirley is survived by her son, John Ertl and wife Valli of Bourbon, MO; five grandchildren: Dalton (Tenise) Ertl of St.James, MO, Chantel (Jacob) Spurgeon of Sullivan, MO, Creanna (Adam) Mayer of Pocatello, ID, Cody (Cheyenne) Leasor of Sullivan, Wyatt (Jaicie Smith) of Bourbon, MO; nine great grandchildren: Abbigail, Aiden, Daimin, Rilee, Fisher, Emily, Parker, Macie, and Lettie Kay; her brothers, Michael (Barb) Dillon of Bourbon and David Dillon of Rome, GA; and multiple nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James “Jim” Ertl; her parents, Maurice and Louise Dillon; her sisters, Carolyn (Dillon) Lockowitz and Agnes Dillon; and a brother, Don Dillon.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM, Friday, July 21, 2023 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Sullivan, MO with Father Paul Telken officiating. Cremation will take place following Mass and inurnment will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
Visitation will be 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan, MO.
