Flags Stolen From American Legion This Holiday Weekend

Sullivan American Legion Post #18 reported to the Sullivan Independent News on Monday, July 6, that more than 10 United States flags were stolen over Independence Day weekend.

Most of the flags were stolen from businesses on Springfield Road.

According to John Baxter, volunteer, and Ryan (Ron) Wehmeyer, the group will have two to three stolen each time they put them out.

This holiday weekend was the worst that they have experienced.

"Typically, we will have a couple stolen when we put them out, often in the downtown area, but this time they hit us hard on Springfield Road businesses," said Baxter. "We have had to order some 24 new flags and poles to replace the ones that have been stolen."

The American Legion Post #18, which works entirely on volunteers to help put up the flags each holiday, must pay to replace them out of their pockets.

Baxter did not know the exact cost at press time but stated they hope their order of 24 new flags and poles will arrive in time for their next display.

Anyone interested in assisting the American Legion Post with the flags' replacement can contact the Sullivan Independent News and your information will be forwarded to the Post.

Anyone with information on the flag thefts is asked to contact Sullivan Police at 573-468-8001.
