Unbeaten Carl Junction Upends Lady Eagles In Quarterfinals

Sullivan gave unbeaten Carl Junction everything they had, but it wasn't enough to contain one of the state's premier programs.

The Lady Bulldogs used a 20-5 run that spanned the second and third quarters Saturday to defeat Sullivan 64-48 in a Class 4 quarterfinal game at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar.

Sullivan (25-3) played shorthanded, yet until late in the second quarter, stayed right there with the No. 3 team in Class 4, one that is making its third Final Four trip in four seasons.

Riley Lock went down with an injury late in Tuesday's sectional game at Missouri S&T. Her presence inside was missed as Carl Junction capitalized.

Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year Katie Scott, a 6-3 forward who has committed to Drury University, finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, but it was freshman Destiny Burgee's 23 points that paced the Lady Bulldogs.

Sullivan fell behind 14-5 late in the first quarter behind a flurry of turnovers. Led by Mallory Shetley, the Lady Eagles managed to climb back. She scored eight straight points to make it a one-point game early in the second quarter.

Scott left the game with two fouls midway through the period, which opened the door for Sullivan. Four straight points by Shetley left the Lady Eagles trailing just 19-17.

Carl Junction would go on a 9-2 run to end the half, capping it with a 3-pointer by Ashley Stokes.

The first of two third quarter 3-pointers by Kya Harbour opened the second half to pull the Lady Eagles within six, but Carl Junction went on an 11-0 run. They led 39-22 before another 3 by Harbour.
