Parks Department Works On City Lake Grounds

The Sullivan Parks Department has continued to work on the Sullivan City Lake and, during the winter months, were able to do some work to the lake grounds both outside and inside the water.

A resident recently reported how impressed they were with the Parks Department work at the lake and felt they should be recognized.

Sullivan Parks Director Dave Wall reported that the 2021 lake level had gotten incredibly low; in fact, the lowest he had ever seen it, which resulted in a number of issues for the parks staff.

One of the issues was the American Lotus, which provides beauty and is often thought to be a water lily, but the plant can be invasive and was taking over portions of the lake. They, along with weeds, combined with low water levels.

“We were able to remove tons of vegetation from the lake from the sides and have worked to control the Lotus which is very invasive in the lake,” said Wall. “We also were able to place some gravel in some areas.”

Wall stated that the department is always working to keep the parks system looking its best and so often, due to weather, things can get behind.

“The lake is full now and we hope to not see it get as low as it did in 2021,” said Wall. “Many area ponds and lakes dropped due to the lack of rainfall in 2021 so things look pretty good at this point.”

Wall stated with the temperatures warming, the Parks Department hopes to have the restroom facilities reopened at the City Lake along with placing the fountain in operation.

One resident reported to the Sullivan Independent News that they were looking forward to kids and adults returning to fishing from the banks of the lake now that the vegetation has been removed.
