Murder Parolee Arrested With Loaded Weapon, Meth

Franklin County sheriff’s deputies Aug. 10 arrested a parolee who has been convicted of murder.

Deputies observed an equipment violation on a SUV, which was traveling east on Parkway Drive.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle near the city of St. Clair and contacted the driver.

The driver identified himself as Samuel Malone Smith, 59.

A loaded and cocked crossbow was removed from the vehicle during the stop for officer safety.

A warrant and license check on Mr. Smith showed his driver’s license was revoked and that he was on probation and parole for Murder 2nd degree and Armed Criminal Action.

Malone also had a current warrant for parole violation with no bond and a warrant out of Franklin County for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Domestic Assault 3rd Degree, and Harassment 1st degree with a $50,000 bond.

Smith was placed under arrest and a suspected methamphetamine pipe was located on his person.

During a search incident to the arrest of the vehicle suspected crystal methamphetamine was located.

Smith was transported to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center without incident.

New charges for possession of a controlled substance and driving while revoked will be applied for with the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
