Man Sentenced For Attempted Hijacking, Resisting Arrest

A Newburg man was sentenced Feb. 1 to 15 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for an attempted hijacking in Leasburg last June, along with resisting arrest.

Kevin Dyer, 44, received 15 years for hijacking and four years for resisting arrest, with the sentences running concurrently.

Dyer pleaded not guilty last September.

He appeared before Judge Megan Seay on Feb. 1 where he pleaded guilty both charges.

The probable cause statement says that Dyer entered the roadway in the area of South Hobby Hut and Hollingshead Road on June 8, 2022, carrying a rifle.

Dyer allegedly pointed the gun at the victim’s car and told her to “scoot over.”

Dyer then said he did not want to hurt the victim or her daughter, but needed them to get out of the car.

The victim told her daughter to lie down.

Dyer walked around to the passenger side, grabbed for the door handle and pointed the gun down.

The victim drove off and contacted 911.

A description of the suspect was given to the investigating deputies and an area canvass and search for the suspect began.

Information was developed regarding the identity of the suspect and the investigation and search for the suspect carried on into the following afternoon.

Deputies learned Dyer had been dropped off in the area earlier that day and was armed with a “black pellet gun.”

Dyer was also sentenced for resisting/interfering with arrest from April 17, 2022, in Crawford County.

Dyer was indicted by a Phelps County grand jury in January 2022 for first-degree burglary and stealing a firearm.

He pleaded not guilty. A trial was scheduled for December 2022, but he failed to appear in October and the case was removed from the trial docket.
