Crawford County Woman’s Body Recovered From Floodwaters

A Crawford County woman who went missing July 10 after floodwaters swept her away from home was located Saturday morning.

Crawford County Sheriff Darin Layman said the body of Faith Gregory was located approximately 1.8 miles downstream from her home near Huzzah Creek.

First responders from area law enforcement and fire districts from Steelville and Quad County were assigned to the search.

“This is not the outcome that any of us were hoping for,” Layman said in a press release.

The sheriff’s office said Friday afternoon that three individuals had been rescued from the floodwaters.

More than 360 people had been rescued after campgrounds in Reynolds County experienced flash flooding. More than 200 children and counselors from Camp Taum Sauk near Lesterville were evacuated by the Missouri National Guard.

Heavy thunderstorms formed overnight Thursday, July 9 into Friday.

Crawford, Iron Reynolds, Madison and Wayne counties received six to 12 inches of rain.

More than 12 inches of rain was reported in some places within a few hours.

Gov. Mike Kehoe’s office said in a press release the rainfall was a 1-in-1,000-year event.

Kehoe has declared a state of emergency.

Huzzah Creek reached around 20 feet at the Highway 8 gauge, which exceeded the previous record of 17 feet.

By Saturday, the gauge had fallen to 6.81 feet as water surged into local creeks and the Meramec River.

The Reynolds County Sheriff’s Office said more than 90 other people were rescued and accounted for.
