Council Discusses Damaged Parks Department Building

A very lengthy discussion was held by the Sullivan City Council on Feb. 6 regarding the future of the Sullivan Parks Department building.

The building was damaged by severe straight line winds in April 2023.

Mayor Dennis Watz had requested staff to budget some numbers for construction of a new parks facility and possible street department facility since both are in the same area.

City Engineer Robert Schaffer presented an estimate of $850,000, which he felt may be a little on the high end of the price and a figure was also estimated by Cochran Engineering at $1,130,000. It included brick work on the building rather than a metal structure with some brick.

The council’s general consensus following discussions was to pursue replacing the park building and seek another building for the street department, along with considerations for use of the current damaged building.

City Administrator JT Hardy reported that funding for the park building would come from the Parks Tax while the street department building would come from capital improvements fund.
