Summer School Enrollment Down From 2016
Summer school enrollment was down this year at the Bourbon School District, with an average of 142 students. An average of 178 students attended summer school in 2016.
The numbers were part of a report prepared by Erin Altemeyer, the district's summer schools director. Board members reviewed the information Thursday night.
Next year, the district will push attendance harder. Superintendent Patricia Thompson told the board a drop in attendance wasn't due to "drudgery" -- the district offered field trips, a pool day, prizes and more activities.
Students get excited about attending summer school while the school year is still going on. Thompson said Altemeyer put together a video of past summer school activities, which students find intriguing.
But once they are at home for the summer, Thompson said she believes interest level drops.
Teachers had to be cut because attendance wasn't at high, and board member John Craig said having to cut bus routes could also deter students.
The summer school program also is an opportunity for students to receive a free breakfast and lunch.
Facilities
Thompson said it has been a busy summer for upgrading some of the facilities. A new drop ceiling has been installed at a section of the middle school, along with LED lighting.
