Man Charged With Shooting Victim In Shoulder

A Bourbon man was arrested Nov. 20 after he allegedly shot a woman in the shoulder while she was driving away.

Caleb E. Sappington, 20, faces one count of first-degree assault — serious injury, two counts of first-degree assault, three counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. that day.

The victim reported being shot in the back of her shoulder. 

A deputy arrived at Highway N and Blue Springs Road to find the victim being treated by EMS.

Deputies and the Missouri State Highway Patrol went to the 1900 block of South Sappington Road in Bourbon and surrounded the home.

Sappington and a juvenile were taken into custody.

The probable cause statement says the victim drove down Sappington’s driveway and was told to leave.

As they were leaving, Sappington’s mother followed the victim in her vehicle.

Sappington followed in his vehicle.

Once they got to the top of Sappington Road, the victim flipped off the mother and drove away.

Sappington allegedly pulled out a hunting rifle and shot at the vehicle as it drove away.

A witness was in the vehicle with the victim, who described the gun to law enforcement.

Officers were initial denied entering Sappington’s home, but a search warrant was acuquired.

A .243 rifle and spent cartridges were located, along with two live rounds inside.

Other spent rounds were located from inside Sappington’s vehicle and the front porch of his home.

Sappington was denied bond Nov. 21 in a court appearance before Judge Patrick Horsefield.

He is set to appear for a bond hearing Nov. 30 at 9 a.m.
