Special Election In Ward 2 Set For May 11

A special election has been scheduled to break a tie in the city of Bourbon’s Ward 2.

Candidates Mary Heywood and Clifford Crawford tied at 21 votes apiece during the April 6 election.

With neither candidate conceding nor opting for a “draw” contest, a special election has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 11.

The winner will succeed Carl Hammack.

Hammack will reportedly exit from the board prior to the special election.

The alderman has served since August 2018 when he was appointed to serve out the remainder of Mike Summers’ term.

Hammack ran unopposed in the April 2019 election.

The city council was expected to meet on Tuesday for its monthly meeting.

Ward 1 Alderwoman Margie Brine was scheduled to be sworn into a full-term.

Brine, appointed to the board in October 2019, won an unopposed one-year term in June 2020.

She was unopposed again in the April 6 election.

With three council members, the board will have a quorum to proceed without Hammack.

Special Election

This will be the second straight year a run-off is necessary to break a tie in a Crawford County city.

Last year it was Cuba, where incumbent Warren Graddy and challenger Harold Halbert in an aldermanic race.

The vote was close again the second time around, with Graddy narrowly defeating Halbert 57-53.

Heywood is seeking a return to the council after being unseated by Sonya Sewald last June.

She had served as Ward 2 alderwoman since 2016 and was mayor from 1997-2006.

Both candidates were asked to attend Tuesday’s meeting to submit — on the record — that they wish for a run-off.
