CCSD Aiming For New Surveillance System
Crawford County Sheriff Darin Layman said his department is planning for a new surveillance system at the jail.
The current system is outdated and was originally installed nearly 20 years ago when the facility opened.
Layman said the department has to rely on securing parts through eBay.
Video retention also lasts just 12 days, which is not nearly long enough.
Layman told the Crawford County Commission he has secured a bid through Stanley Solutions that would cost between $250,000 to $300,000.
“We have one last bond payment and then can use our sales tax as support,” Layman said.
The sales tax was extended by voters in April.
It was implemented in 2001 to pay for the jail.
Body Scanner
Layman also gave an update on a body scanner/UV disinfectant the department purchased using CARES Act funds.
The UV lighting can sanitize mattresses, clothing and equipment in a matter of minutes.
“It’s a big savings in time, water and bleach,” Layman said.
HVAC
The HVAC installation remains a work in progress at the jail.
Ransom Heating & Cooling is installing the system and Layman said they have been dealing with personnel shortages, but the project should be done soon.
A new HVAC system was proposed in 2018 due to being outdated.
Layman said at the time that parts for the system were so obsolete that they had to specially manufactured.
The company tasked with manufacturing those parts informed Layman they would no longer continue with production.
