BHS Teacher Leads Cleanup Of World War II Training Site

Bourbon High School teacher JD Huitt led a Memorial Day cleanup of Currahee Mountain in Georgia, a former World War II training site.

The mountain was made famous by the HBO television series “Band of Brothers.”

Currahee Mountain contained an extensive amount of graffiti and vandalism, which appalled Huitt.

Huitt has a YouTube show titled History Underground, which documented the vandalism.

“It has marred the top of Currahee,” Huitt said. “It dishonors the memory of men who trained there and fought on our behalf.”

Huitt said many people reach the summit of Currahee and see the vandalism.

In 2020, Huitt said he “casually mentioned” getting a group together to try and clean up the graffiti.

That started a chain of events that led to Huitt teaming up with the Currahee Cleanup Project.

On Memorial Day weekend, Huitt and a group of volunteers traveled there to restore the mountain.

Because it is located on federal property, Huitt said there were certain guidelines that had to be followed.

He sent out a call to his subscribers asking for funding to purchase elephant snot, a graffiti remover that costs around $80 per gallon.

Sprayers, brushes and other supplies also were necessary.

In a matter of 36 hours, more than $10,000 came in.

Huitt said that every dollar that came in above what was necessary would be donated to Camp Toccoa at Currahee, a not-for profit foundation that is working to restore the area.
