Assessor/Collector Offices Close, Prepare For March 28 Reopen

The offices of the Crawford County assessor and collector closed on Friday, March 11 and will reopen on Monday, March 28 at 8 a.m.

Assessor Kellie Vestal and Collector Pat Schwent have been working at a temporary location provided by Steelville Telephone Exchange since November when asbestos was discovered at their office building.

Nearly five months have passed and the building is almost ready to safely reopen.

In a press release, Vestal and Schwent said the length of time for the closure is necessary in order to prepare the offices for the movers on Wednesday.

Taxpayers will continue to be able to pay at crawfordcountycollector.com, through the telephone system at 1-877-690-3729 Jurisdiction Code 3524 or through the regular mail service.

“Several factors have prevented this move to be less than perfect, so we ask and appreciate your patience and cooperation in this matter,” Vestal and Schwent said.

Asbestos was discovered in October as the old flooring to their building was being pulled up.

The offices closed Nov. 4 and the county has paid STE $3,800 per month for office space.

County Clerk John Martin was originally given an estimate that the project would be completed by Christmas.

The offices were completely gutted and the demolition cost $26,000.
