Baseball Tackles Tigers And Wildcats At Salem Tourney

Sullivan (16-7) played their final regular season tournament in Salem (15-3) from May 3-4. The Eagles came in clutch with a 3-2 walk-off victory over Waynesville (3-15) in the opening round but fell 9-1 to a tough Licking (19-3) team to close out Friday. Sullivan rebounded with an 8-1 district crushing of the host, Salem, the following day.

Dayton Skaggs and Gavin Schmidt were selected for the all-tournament team. D. Skaggs went 4-8 at the bat, driving in an RBI and recording two doubles. Schmidt tallied up 3 RBIs, two stolen bases and a double while going 5-10 when hitting.

Waynesville

Sullivan slid by the Tigers in a 3-2 walk-off win in the opening round on Friday, May 3. 

Sullivan entered the bottom of the 7th, trailing 2-1. Nolan Ulrich managed to tie it on Gavin Schmidt’s line drive. Then Chase Blue sacrificed himself on a pop-out so Schmidt could clutch the game-winning score. 

Raiden Redd was Sullivan’s first scorer and punched it home on D. Skaggs’s grounder in the bottom of the 4th.

Schmidt led his squad with two hits. He also brought in a run and an RBI.

Ulrich pulled off a run, a hit and a walk.

D. Skaggs unleashed an RBI and a hit.

Blue racked up an RBI and a walk.

Drake Gawer grabbed a hit and a walk.

Mitchell Garner took a walk.

The Eagles chalked up six hits, four walks and three RBIs in 26 batting appearances.

Lucas Parsons was Sullivan’s starting pitcher for five innings. He hurled five strikeouts and gave up no earned runs, three hits and two walks. 

Kaden Smith shut the door on the Tigers with two strikeouts.

Licking

Sullivan struggled in a 9-1 loss against Licking, the reigning Class 3 state champions, on Friday, May 3

Alex Toews was the only Eagle to land home.

Landen Doza drove in an RBI and a hit.

D. Skaggs had a team-high two hits.

Nate McReynolds led his squad with two walks.

Sullivan’s batting lineup tallied three hits, two walks and an RBI.

McReynolds was Sullivan’s first pitcher to take the mound. He delivered three strikeouts while surrendering five earned runs, five walks and four hits.

Schmidt came in for relief during the top of the 4th, executing two strikeouts and giving up a walk.

Isaiah Skaggs held a brief stint in the middle of the 5th inning and allowed a hit. 

Blue was next on the rotation and surrendered three earned runs, three hits and a walk. 

Grant Halmick pitched against the last batter.

Salem

The Eagles warmed up against second-seeded Salem for an 8-1 district sweep on Saturday, May 4. 

Cambrian Koch pitched the full seven innings for Sullivan, with five strikeouts and no earned runs. He allowed only two hits and a walk. Head coach Ian Whitson awarded Koch the Most Valuable Player belt after the game. 

In the bottom of the first, Garner got the Eagles’ offense rolling with a double that drove in three RBIs. During the game, he also recorded a walk.

Schmidt broke away with a team-high three hits. He also brought in two RBIs and a walk.

Seth Valley racked up two runs, a hit and a walk.

Blue unleashed two runs and a walk.

Doza came away with a run, an RBI and a walk.

Gawer grabbed a run and a hit.

Toews collected a run and an RBI.

D. Skaggs and Ulrich each executed a hit.

The Eagles grabbed eight hits, 7 RBIs and five walks when at-bat.
