Crawford County Schools Closed Through April 24

Crawford County schools will be closed through Friday, April 24 and are scheduled to tentatively reopen on Monday, April 27.

The announcement was made Friday morning in a letter signed by superintendents from Bourbon, Cuba and Steelville.

Classes were tentatively scheduled to reopen on Monday, April 6.

“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to present challenges locally and globally,” the letter said. “As area superintendents serving Crawford County school districts, we are working closely to monitor the situation and make informed decisions regarding educational options for area students.”

The superintendents — Dr. Kyle Gibbs from Bourbon, Jonathan Earnhart from Cuba and Mike Whittaker from Steelville — said they maintaining contact with the Crawford County Health Department and leadership at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Based on current information regarding the continued spread of COVID-19 and directives to maintain social distancing, the superintendents decided to remain closed.

“Throughout the coming weeks, we will continue to monitor this situation and evaluate the need to extend this date,” the letter said. “Although we know that this extended school closure creates a hardship for many, the safety and health of our students and families must be our highest priority.”

Continued closure will decrease the risk of spread.

Each district will be in contact with patrons on continued learning and meal distribution.

In the coming weeks, the districts will provide details about kindergarten registration, graduation, summer school and more.
