Dear Editor: Were you aware that politicians in Washington, D.C. have been taking taxpayers’ Social Security savings out of the Social Security Trust Fund and spending it on pet special interest projects as “payoffs” to their political allies that help them get reelected? Instead of keeping Social Security in the Trust Fund, they simply move it to the “General Fund” where they spend it on whatever they want. So far, they have taken a mind-boggling [...]
Dear Editor: Election time is coming up for the President of the United States. Just how do we vote for a person to hold this office to work for the good of the American people? Well, there are two ways to do this: (A) Go ahead and vote for the person running in your party and maybe he/she is not for the people. (B) Vote for who you think would be the best for the [...]
Dear Editor: Let us stop and think about what it means to be a Christian. The word “Christian” means Christlike. So those of us who claim to be a Christian should live like Jesus Christ. It is so easy to be like Jesus while sitting in church on Sunday, but it can sometimes be a challenge the rest of the time. How do we live our lives? Do we show the love of Jesus to [...]
Dear Editor: Mercy Hospital Washington hosted the 2012 Heart to Heart Fair on February 4 to raise awareness about heart disease during National Heart Health Month. We offered educational booths, presentations on heart health and medical screenings – including good and bad cholesterol checks – with free consultations from Mercy physicians. This year, we introduced a Kids’ Zone to help us match our theme, “Heart Health for All Ages,” and introduced our new stroke services [...]

As our third full week of session is wrapping up, we are getting in full swing with committee hearings and debating bills on the House floor. Every January, the governor gives his state of the state address. And, much like prior years, the speech included his budget and a laundry list of things he would like to see us pass this session. As I reflect on what the governor said last week, there were several [...]
By Jim Bartle, I don’t know that I’ve written any articles with such an angry, disgusted tone as I will with this editorial, “I’m Disgusted With Meth.” This week brought about my continued frustration with the current state of affairs with methamphetamine, with our judicial system and with our politicians in Jefferson City as well as Washington, D.C. This week, two Sullivan firefighters entered a burning home believing that there may be someone inside after [...]
Dear Editor: Sullivan is so very blessed to have Missouri Baptist Hospital in our city. I received excellent care from all the doctors, nurses, technicians and everyone I came into contact with. Recently, I ended up in the ER and spent eight days there; five days in ICU. Housekeeping keeps the hospital spotless. Everyone was very professional, caring and friendly. God bless each of you. Dear Editor: A recent (January 23, 2012) article in “The New York Times” reveals in detail how unevenly the evils of casino gambling fall on those among us who can least afford to lose. There can be no doubt that the revenue we gain from gambling is not worth the lives that it destroys or the crime that it fosters. Therefore, let us take immediate steps not only to end this tragic tax on our [...]
Dear Editor: No heat. No problem. And just like that, a service technician was en route to just another service call, but this would be a call that we’ve seen too many times. Upon arriving at the customer’s home, we were led to the portion of the basement that is very seldom remembered unless there is a problem. After removal of the dusty covers, it was evident that the furnace was non-operational, and in need [...]
