The article should have read that the site will be available after the first of the year. You can follow Dave on Facebook (Dave Schatz) or via Twitter at twitter.com/daveschatz111 until the website is available.

Tried to find some more information last week after reading the article in the paper. I wouldn't promote a link to a Web site that isn't even up. Good luck running a successful campaign...

Cousey,

Excellent observation and commentary! Unfortunately, it will probably go straight over the heads of those most needing of it.

I noticed that the Sullivan Middle School had a guest speaker make a presentation to the student body.
I am curious to know if a letter was sent to parents in advance, allowing them to know what the content would be and allow the parents to keep their students home rather than subject them to the opinions of the guest speaker? Do the parents know the speaker's political affiliation? Do the parents know if he is pro life or pro abortion? He says he is in favor of the students being good, healthy students, but what if his motivation was to offer an opinion different from what mom and dad suggest at home? Parents who wanted to protect their children from a speech made by the President of the United States surely would want to protect their children from a speaker who is unknown to the majority of local citizens. I bet most parents don't even know this assembly took place. The students were required to draw their own conclusions. Isn't that what education is all about?

The school district did not prevent the use of the President's speech. It was not presented as a live feed, but was available to any teacher that could and can still use it as part of their curriculum. The problem with this is that all schools are under pressure to preform through test scores to justify funding. This is by state and federal guidelines not local.

There were to be lesson plans sent out from the President to be used before the speech. Most teachers felt they could not afford the time away from their required lesson plans (again not by local mandate.) At the last minute this was all thrown out by the President's office because there were few schools across our nation that felt they could devote a day or two out of their schedules for this. When this all changed, it was too late over a holiday weekend to change plans.

Sullivan was not the only school to make this decision. All schools in this area that I contacted made the same decision--Union, Washington, St. Clair, Bourbon, Cuba, St. James, New Haven, and Herman. Yes, I took the time to check the whole story before pointing fingers. Likewise our area and our state was in the majority to handle the broadcast in the same way. Some schools in other parts of the country aired it in the cafeterias since it was on duing their lunch periods, but most students chose to go about their daily lunch routine of socialzing rather than watch. You see the decision had nothing to do with race or politics, but plain old meet the guidelines and requirements to get the funding to be able to provide the services to all our children.

Amen, Gerry. I hadn't heard that Sullivan was among the schools mired in this senseless and ridiculous debate -- how sad.
