Property Tax Rebates For Seniors On Rent Or Real Estate

The Sullivan Senior Center is currently making appointments for Seniors to have their rebates figured for rent or real estate.  This is called the “Circuit Breaker” or Property Tax Credit.  These appointments are with volunteers who use the Senior Center to meet with the seniors on a set schedule, so appointments are necessary.
For those who have not heard of the tax credit or have never had theirs figured, if you can provide the information needed and meet all the requirements, you can go back three years.
To qualify, if you rent: A single person’s income must not be over $27, 500.  A married couple can not make over $29,500, combined income. If you are a 100 percent service connected disabled veteran, do not include VA payments. You must also have lived in your home the entire calendar year. If you rent from a facility that does not pay property taxes, you are not eligible for a Property Tax Credit.
To qualify, if you own your own home:  A single person’s income must not be over $30,000.  A married couple can not make over $34,000 combined income. If you are a 100 percent service connected veteran, do not include VA payments.
Other criteria include: Were you or your spouse 65 or older as of December 31, 2012, and were you or your spouse a Missouri resident the entire calendar year?  Are you or your spouse 100 percent disabled as a result of military service?  Are you or your spouse 100 percent disabled? Were you 60 years of age or older as of December 31, 2012, and did you receive surviving spouse social security benefits? If you answered yes to any of these questions and you meet the income guidelines, you are eligible.
What do I need to bring with me to get my Property Tax Credit figured?  If you rent, you will need receipts or a statement from your landlord as proof of rent paid last year.  You will also need to bring proof of all income.  If you own your property, you will need a paid property tax receipt for last year and proof of all income.
Volunteers will only be available through March, so call the Senior Center at 573-468-3766 to make your appointment as soon as possible.
