Help Needed For Meals On Wheels

Periodically the Sullivan Senior Center has to appeal to our community for volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels. When we put that word out, one or two people might respond, but not usually.
The Meals on Wheels program is very important for many frail and elderly who depend on that meal to keep them healthy so they can remain living in their own homes.
We are appealing to churches, business offices, retirees or anyone else willing to dig deep into your heart and commit to this worthwhile service.  You can take one day a week yourself, or a group can set up a rotation of volunteers to commit to one day a week so no one has to deliver that often.
Volunteers are crucial to keep this program going. Many times that daily contact with a volunteer is the only person our homebound have with the outside world. That contact is important to make sure they are safe and are not in need of assistance. It insures working family members that their loved one is being checked on regularly when they are not able to do so themselves.
Anyone over the age of 18 can deliver these meals. We currently have 5 routes that provide meals to about 68 people. Each route comes with a route map and turn by turn driving directions.  Most of our volunteers are assigned a set day and a set route, so you know each week who you will be delivering to and will enjoy seeing and visiting with the same people from week to week.
Delivering Meals on Wheels takes anywhere from 30-60 minutes to run a route, depending on how much time you like to visit with the clients. Most days you would leave the center about 11 a.m. We ask that you be at the center by 10:45 a.m. Mileage reimbursement is available upon request.
To help, please stop by the Senior Center at 730 W. Main and pick up an information packet. All volunteers are required to have a background check because we are sending strangers into the homes of our frail and elderly. We are currently in need of a volunteer on Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you are willing to be an “on call” sub to fill in during the absence of other volunteers, we would appreciate that too.
We look forward to having new volunteers join our team of dedicated volunteers doing good work for our community.
