Firefighters Quick Response And Homeowner Actions Save Home Tuesday

By James B. Bartle
An alert homeowner’s actions and quick response by Sullivan Firefighters prevented a serious fire around a flue from damaging the remainder of a home Tuesday evening at 8:37 p.m.
Sullivan Fire was called to the home of Kent and Debbie Koch, 341 Hwy. WW, at 8:37 p.m. and arrived at 8:46 p.m. The homeowner had used a fire extinguisher to knock down some of the fire along with water until firefighters arrived.
“The fire was centered around a free standing chimney that was boxed in with wood,” said Sullivan Fire Chief Rich White. “The fire was contained to this area with some charring to the roof and no extension into the house. The alert homeowner, who noticed the chimney on fire and used their actions and called for firefighters, helped this not be a fully working structure fire. Had this fire happened later at night things would not have been as minor as they were.”
The fire was battled by 13 firefighters using 6 apparatus on the scene followed by assistance from Bourbon Fire.
